  • Absorbing read

Beautifully written memoir. Always interesting, sometimes heartbreaking, often amusing. Easy to read despite the author appearing to regard us as equals in his rarified world of brain surgery. Finished the book quickly, feeling not only that I had been entertained, but that I knew a little more about the wonders of the brain, the fortitude of those whose brains have been damaged, and the skill, courage and frailties of the surgeons whose work is to repair this damage.

  • Wonderful

Sometimes with a “medical” book one finds an all too deliberate attempt at humour or a trivialisation of issues. Not here. This is from the heart, an open and truthful book - filled with triumph and tragedy. Sometimes an author gives you a flavour of themselves through their writing, this book makes you feel like inviting Mr Marsh to dinner.

  • An unmissable book.

Compelling, candid, fascinating. This autobiography is a real page turner and well worth a read, and I am not normally a biography fan.

  • Great choice of a title, is not just about surgical skills and courage, the assessment is as important!

Beautifully written by a professional who does not see just a medical case, but sees the patient as a person, is aware of the impact on the family and more to the point Dr Henry Marsh does not fear of making himself vulnerable by revealing his own feelings. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book, it put me in touch with my own experience of working as a young medical doctor of some decades ago. I look forward to reading his other book ' The Admission's.

  • Factual Medicine

A warts and all account of life and death brain surgery. He is a bit pompous which he accounts to his upbringing but it is a surprisingly good read which I found hard to put down. Marsh is very critical of the NAS and longs for former times when he had more clinical freedom. There seems a disproportionate number of failures in the account, or perhaps I am wrong and your chances of survival are pretty small. I will read the follow up Admissions.

  • Deep and moving non fiction.

Lived in his world completely everyday dilemmas of life/death whether to treat or possibly over treat patients and mistakes for a top brain surgeon. Background of a increasingly frustrating NHS. Not for the squeamish although I skipped those bits! Short chapters great for travelling.

  • Realistic and Honest

This is an account of medical cases made by the neurosurgeon who basically opens his heart to the public. The stories being real it puts us in a position of full understanding of feelings, fears and ways of dealing with the medical problems. The neurosurgeon himself gives us an insight of how it all is processed and tries to answer some vital questions arisen through the cases. Extraordinarily vivid and captivating and extremely credible.

  • Do no harm

Although quite squeamish, I think this is a truly remarkable book. The description of the operations was quite detailed but fascinating and the life story kept me enthralled to the very end. A wonderful read for anybody
