About this product

Product Information

The Rolls-Royce Merlin aero engine still has the power to turn heads and raise hairs on the backs of necks, for this was the heart that gave life to the famous names of Hurricane, Spitfire, Lancaster, Mosquito and Mustang. This is the inside story of the mighty Merlin, from its genesis in the 740hp PV-12 engine that was first flown in 1935, through its rapid development during the war years until in its ultimate version, the Merlin 130 series designed for the de Havilland Hornet, it produced over 2,600hp. * Innovative extension of the Haynes aircraft manuals concept into iconic aero engines. * The Rolls-Royce Merlin engine is probably the most famous liquid-cooled aero engine of all time. * The Merlin engine powered the RAF's wartime Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. * Fully illustrated with more than 250 photos and illustrations. * Official publication with the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust.

  • Merlin's technological magic

A good blend of engineering history and technology written in a very accessible style. I am a Civil Engineer, but I am sure that the layman can also read and enjoy this manual (occasionally speeding through any obscure passages). It paints the history of the engine and the foresight of the Rolls-Royce company in their historical context very well. Well worth the money so far (I'm about 1/3rd way through it.) Argie

  • workshop manual no, history book yes

the title of this book reads "workshop manual" the ones I have from haynes really are, this is a historic overview and not about lay outs, dismantling guide or providing timing and operational guidances

  • Nerds will love this

Great manual only gave it 4 stars because I would have liked a more in depth look at the inner workings of the engine

  • A surprised nice book

In general before ordering I expect only drawings, exploded view images , and lot of specifications......but surprised it was by seeing a lot of photographs from all planes the Merlin engine was fitted in , as well the hole story of fabricating , the people . A real nice book for the Spitfire collector.

  • Owner's workshop manual - not

The idea of a Haynes manual for the iconic Merlin I found a very attractive idea, especially for a gift for a friend who is an aircraft engineer. Unfortunately the book is neither a workshop manual nor a detailed history but a good read nevertheless, so enjoy it for the curio it is.
