Very good performance/value for money, offering much flexibility in expansion & performance
I have read favorable reviews on Synology products but have never owned one until now.
Prior to this, I owned several QNAP NAS' which have served me well. I really didn't experience much issue with the QNAPs & they did what they were supposed to do pretty well.
Synology has been known for the great software which runs their NASes. They were known to be the market leader on that front whereas QNAP were known for their great hardware.
My experience with the DS918+ on the whole has been favorable. Installation & set up were straightforward, though I must say I did not find the software to be 100% easy to use. On a few occasions, I struggled to locate certain features. It seemed to me QNAP's NAS software wasn't inferior after all. They were about on par IMO.
Hardware wise, the DS918+ provided much performance enhancing flexibility such as two M.2 NVMe slots & two DDR3 slots of up to 8GB of RAM. This, along with a proprietary hybrid RAID feature from Synology & options to grow the NAS config to beyond 4 HDDs does make the DS918+ an attractive proposition. Definitely one for the shortlist!
