Cheap, good quality modem or modem-router, but needs unlocking and setting up
This comes as a modem-router. You can use it in one of two ways. The first way is to keep it as a modem-router and give access to your LAN via a cheap hub. This is not going be plug and play however. You will need to unlock it and configure it for ADSL. To use it as modem only, with another router, you need to put it into bridge modem mode. Done this way is quite a cheap way of getting a high quality DSL modem, and the advantage is that it also supports VDSL A good choice of router to pair it with in this configuration would be the Mikrotik Router Board. Bear in mind that the Mikrotik is not a consumer product however. If you don't know networking to some extent, do not get it. I have not yet got it working with my DSL provider. Following the Andrews and Arnold instructions below I have it accessible from the Mikrotik router, and it connects to the provider's DSL. However it is then failing to get an IP address assigned. Its probably a configuration issue somewhere, but not clear where. So my advice would be, you need to be happy doing such things as setting up your computer with a fixed IP address, trying out VCI or LLC, trouble shooting the setup. The version shipped by my vendor looks new, and was revision 3B hardware. This is important according to AA, don't buy any other version. There is an AA site and guide which a review is not allowed to link to. Google it. this wills show you how to unlock and configure. I'm sure I will get it working in the end. The next step is to put it into router-modem mode, and see if I can get it working like that, then note the working configuration and try to duplicate that with bridge mode and the Mikrotik. None of this really reflects on the device itself. It just says if you are not familiar at least to some extent with the basics of networking, this may not be for you. But if you are, and if you want a modem only to pair with a router, and if you want the VDSL capability at some point, this is one of the few choices available, and is cheap and high quality.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Refurbished

Brilliant! I was really, really pleased with this purchase. I needed it as part of a development bench for a fibre broadband router setup. I had done my homework and found out that the '3B' model was the mature version and I was able to reprogram the modem with something a bit more friendly than the BT firmware. Worked out of the box!
Great bit of kit. If you are already with BT for your fibre connection, it works right away with no configuration. If you are with another ISP there are guides out there to show you how to configure it for them. I got this unit as my line has a stupid amount of noise (SNR), none of the ISP hubs worked very well, however this little box handles line noise much better, not a major increase in speed but my line stability has improved 100% Worth the cash :)Verified purchase: YesCondition: Refurbished
