Sumptous, Euphonic, Magical! A Very Special Headphone.
I've been on the fence about the Audioquest Nighthawk Carbon for sometime. I have read mixed reviews about them; some of them glowing, others less enthusiastic. Given that they were $700 new, and recently heavily discounted, I decided to give them a try. And, I'm glad that I did.
First off, I must say that these are the most comfortable headphones that I've ever owned. They are self adjusting and allow one to listen to music for hours in comfort, without having to adjust the headband.
The Nighthawk Carbon's ear pads are also supple and coddle your head.
What I also really like about these headphones is that they are super efficient at 25 ohms impedance. So I can drive them to very comfortable listening levels and well beyond without distorting my computer's headphone jack.
They also scale well with a good quality headphone amplifier. As for quality, the Nighthawk Carbons are also very well constructed and aesthetically unlike any other headphone I have ever used. They look high-tech because they are high-tech.
The bass is well produced, while the midrange and treble are just slightly recessed. This makes the Nighthawk sound somewhat veiled in the midrange and treble, however, only mildly so. Some listeners enjoy this more relaxed sound, however, if you prefer a brighter sounding headphone, the midrange and treble can be boosted using equalization.
The Nighthawk sounds great with all types of music, and allows one to listen for hours on end without fatigue.
Highly recommended!
