Alain Corneau's moving film tells of of the 17th century composer Sainte Colombe whose rise to fame in the king's court ends when his wife suddenly dies and he becomes a hermit. But to his door comes cobbler's son Marin Marais who begs Colombe to teach him, a role the recluse accepts. But while Marais learns to become a master musician and composer, he is seduced by the prospect of emulating his master's fame while seducing Colombe's daughter at the same time, leaving them both alone and devastated while for Marais, fame beckons.
