this is a one point fixed width stereo plug in power microphone. it receives 4 stars for the simple fact it is not a RODE but the rode lavalier while much clearer quality, far more expensive, are mono only. so 4.5 would be more accurate!
it is a plug in power condenser, and therefore minidisc recorders with a 3.5 mic input will power it. i'm using it with a tascam DR05 which has plug in power (selected under one of the menus) and is far more discrete to record with, than using the full recorder built in mics.
recommended are small fluffy windshields (similar to rycotes) and a few available on ebay. i found some grey ones and used a black sharpie pen to colour it more discretely!
as to audio quality there is no isolation from the capsule to the clip so be careful how and where mounted. using a small piece of foam rubber can help if using it in a fixed location / on a table. clip to clothing but away from anything dangling like pendants or zips.
it is broadly a flat response, some roll off on the bass and is subject to proximity effect. high end quite clear and sounds reasonably flat. for voice is it very clear pickup, the stereo can aid the recording.
i also record atmospheric sounds, and again it works well, particularly with a good windshield to stop wind effects, or at least reduce them. it does lack a little at the low end (bass) but easily corrected with EQ postmix.
the connector is a standard 3.5 mm TRS where R is right and tip is left. i would not advise and have never tried with ordinary phantom power (48v). cable is sturdy cotton covered, no noticeable noise, it is just under a metre in length and adequate.
the clip is NOT very sturdy and the mic can fall out/off it quite easily if caught.
overall it is very good. it is NOT an MS type so bear this in mind if recordings are mixed down for mono. but quite remarkable for the size.
