ReviewsThere was a need for an attractive book which is easy to understand and which presented the materials in a manner that encouraged success and kept the reader motivated. The Renal Diet Cookbook supplies a great deal of valuable information and motivation, including excellent advice on getting started in a way that will ease you into the plan. My wife and I enjoyed the variety of recipes that were uniformly easy to prepare and delicious. This book was much more user friendly than several others I have read. ?Dr. John Sarbacker, retired Dermatologist and CDK4 patient, I often get asked by kidney patients if there is a renal cookbook I can recommend to them. I am very pleased to now have this one available. It's not just a book of recipes; it starts with solid, easy-to-understand information about aspects of the renal diet and why they are important. In order to make a change, we all need to understand the reason for it. The recipes are not complicated and are explained simply so that even a novice in the kitchen can follow them. This is a very well thought-out book by an expert in the field of renal nutrition. I have already recommended this book and will continue to. With 26 million Americans diagnosed with kidney disease, a book like this was much needed. --Paul Garney, MS RD LD CHC, Vice President of Compliance for DIALYSPA, My patients need information, education, meal plans, ample options, simple recipes, flavor, fun, and the reassurance that what they eat is good for them. This book addresses these needs in a way that provides hope, wellness, and accessibility. It is hard to balance this and still create a book that is not intimidating and appealing to the taste buds. I was excited to see the meal plan option and also the chapter on vegetarian options. I also was delighted by the chapter on desserts. Now when my patients ask me for ideas and start to look at food like medicine I can just give them this reference and off they go! No more handouts. No more missing delights like desserts. No more dead ends for vegetarians. It's all there in wonderful, colorful pictures. I'm excited this book exists. Nice recipes

This book follows the guidelines given to me by my own medical professionals so I feel confident using the recipes and meal plans. My only concern is the size of the servings in the recipes. Come on!!! My dinner seldom consists of 1/4 cup plain white rice, 3 spears of asparagus and 3 grilled shrimp. My 2 year old grandson eats bigger portions than that. I have enough health problems as it is, that I don't want to spend the rest of my days feeling hungry with my stomach growling all the time. While I don't believe in overindulging, there has to be a better middle ground than this.

  • Most critical review

    Information is Outdated

Many of these recipes are high on the USDA's PRAL list, meaning that they are meat and dairy laden and will contribute to a high Potential Renal Acid Load. Kidneys do not like acid-forming foods. I'm giving it 2 stars, rather than 1 because there are a few useful salad recipes. But basically, the information in this book is outdated. If you really want to save your kidneys, read 'Stopping Kidney Disease' by Lee Hull.

  • Wonderful Renal Health Book

I found this book to be very informative for my kidney disease Stage 3. I was worried when I found out that I had it. I talked to my doctor about it to get more information. I decided to get a book on renal heath and this was the one I decided on. It is very informative on which foods are good for kidney disease and which to be careful with. I have changed my diet and I am trying to avoid salt (found in frozen dinners, soups, etc.) for my high blood pressure. I'm trying to cut out too many carbs and other additives. Be careful of GMO's. I feel well informed and I will include all the good foods but I won't go overboard and deny myself some of the foods that I can still enjoy. If you have any stage of kidney disease (especially Stages 1, 2, and 3. Stages 4 and 5 are more advanced. Please do yourself a favor and buy this book I probably won't make many of the recipes because I really don't cook too much but I will still follow the diet as much as I possibly can.

  • Informative Easy To Follow and Read Renal Diet Cookbook

It is nice that it gives you a 28-Day action plan to kick-start a kidney-healthy diet. It is informative on what the different substances are that one may need to eliminate or cut back on when they have CKD, why & what their roles are in our body. It lists foods to avoid and which to choose from, along with a helpful guide to a large list of foods to choose from, for a kidney friendly pantry, and a lot of recipes from A-Z, including beverages and dressings. That is good, because following a kidney friendly diet, can be a bit overwhelming. This makes it a lot easier! It gives you strategies for dining out, fast-food to different food restaurants, what to avoid, and what is better to choose from. Oh, and for the vegetarians out here, it also lists good sources of protein when following a renal-friendly diet, and recipes. From avoiding Trouble-Foods, to choices to choose from, and frequently asked questions, this is a very informative, easy to read, easy to follow, renal diet cookbook.

  • Saved my life! This book opened my eyes to eat healthy foods! There is Potassium in a lot of foods that are not listed on the package!

Very informative to help my kidney functions along with healthy eating habits. I would highly recommend this book if you have high potassium. I have learned how to read labels in store products that have hidden salt/sugar/potassium. Hoping that it be mandatory marked on all foods.

  • Excellent book and cookbokk

I bought this for my mother due to her recent diagnosis. She took it to her dr.s appointment and he was extremely impressed with the content that he briefly read. In a nutshell, this book provided more extensive information than her dietician. Highly recommended!

  • cooking for Kidney failure people

Excellent well written book. Lots of lists for a far more definitive look at what to eat, what not to eat and what to eat in very small portions. The hardest problem for me is what and how much to eat. Excellent guidebook for this purpose.

  • Renal? No Way! Much Better Then That! (Not Kidney Disease?) This works!

I'm so surprised! We (my husband who needs this type of diet) were told to purchase this book. They were completely correct/right! Part of this book gives you a simple outlook as to what you'll need to keep your diet within the (kidney disease) correct foods and also this gives you a wonderful reciepe selection which helps even more! We've both made dinners from this book and am completely satisfied with our menus and dinners!
