About this product

Product Information

Designing and making successful automata involves combining materials, mechanisms and magic. 'Making Simple Automata 'book explains how to design and construct small scale, simple mechanical devices made for fun. Materials such as paper and card, wood, wire, tinplate and plastics are covered along with mechanisms - levers and linkages, cranks and cams, wheels, gears, pulleys, springs, ratchets and pawls. This wonderful book is illustrated with examples throughout and explains the six golden rules for making automata alongside detailed step-by-step projects. Topics covered include: . Materials - paper and card, wood, wire, tinplate and plastics . Mechanisms - levers and linkages, cranks and cams, wheels, gears, pulleys, springs, ratchets and pawls . Magic - an unanalyzable charm, a strong fascination so that the whole is more than the sum of its parts . AUTHOR: Robert Race has been a full-time maker for more than thirty years. His work, including automata, kinetic sculpture and moving toys, has been widely exhibited. He has been an active member of the British Toymakers Guild since 1991. 110 colour photographs

  • History/ applications for beginning automata

I was looking for a beginning automata book that was not too difficult. Has photos but the wire ones are harder to read/ approximate. The directions were in paragraph form- not so quickly apprehended to a visual like myself. I gave it a star loss for this alone. A one two three four photo in process would have been a better format with directions by each photo. The automata of different countries was awesome and the book was great for the projects that could be done in paper and wood/wire. Appreciated professional artist renderings of different takes on the processes. A great book.

  • A good starting point

This book is a good starting point for anyone wishing to design their own automata, and has a good level of detail of the history, however lacks technical details such as materials, techn8cal considerations, design help.
