The Picturesque Railway: The Lithographs of John Cooke Bourne. John Cooke Bourne (181496) captured one of the most exciting periods in modern British history the building of the railways. In his panoramic yet intricate topographical sketches, Bourne showed that as well as being a feat of modern engineering a railway could sit comfortably in the landscape of the English countryside.

Extremely interesting insight into two of the most important construction projects in human history. The London to Birmingham railway , chief engineer Robert Stephenson and the London to Bristol line , chief engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel changed the world in a previously unimagined way .It became possible for goods and people to move long distances quickly cheaply and relatively safely never before possible. My only criticism of the book is that the text print is not particularly easy to read.Bourne did a good job of portraying the scenes of construction for posterity , just before the advent of photography.
