Early days
They consider themselves very forward and modern, but even after just a few chapters one can clearly see that the entire country has been held back in the 18th century, I mean if your mother says you can't marry the man you love...you don't but you've got to marry who she wants. This mother tries to govern her daughter, nearly destroying her life.
