  • Compelling and insightful account of human evolution

If you are interested in learning more about the evolution of our [and related] species, this provides a superb summary. It is easy to read and brings together strands of material into a coherent account of human development. Where there is insufficient knowledge to state absolute truths, the author makes well reasoned explanation, into credible explanations. A compelling read.

  • Great read

This is a compelling and thought provoking story of the history and impact of our species. It could easily have been a heavy read but the author has an easy style that makes the book digestible without diluting the information and messages.

  • Eloquent and Enlightening

The author writes with compelling authority, without being didactic, and avoids the usual patronising pedagogical pitfalls associated with presenting such a broad sweep of human history. A very fine and enjoyable thought provoking read.

  • The most thought provoking book I've read in ten years.

This is a very accessible book - easy to read and a compelling page-turner. It puts the whole of human evolution into context, from the big bang to the present day. It also makes a number of very acute observations that will really get you thinking, such as; from an evolutionary standpoint, we didn't domesticate wheat, wheat domesticated us! Or; that we would still be living in small tribal groups were it not for shared beliefs in irrational ideas, such as following a religion. Brilliant stuff, can't recommend it highly enough, and probably a good read for bright GCSE students onwards who want to get a context for their studies.

  • A real education in one book. Brilliant.

In the first page or two, this book explains the different science disciplines in a brief and clear way. It goes on to explain how human kind has developed - by chapter two it gave me more understanding of human relationships on a personal and a cultural basis.... Its simply brilliant. Thank you.

  • Good dipping-in book!

This book was recommended to me. I find that in later life, I really like reading about history and although this is not a book to read lie a novel, it's really good to dip into and read a bit every so often. I am thoroughly enjoying learning what it has to offer.

  • Good introduction to anthropology.

An interesting, easy read, especially the first half. Nothing particularly new, but a good book for the general reader.
