Arrived quicker than expected and in fine order. This first novel in the Kingmaker series does just what it says on the cover: it sticks your nose into the dirty, grimy reality of 15th c. England and the War of the Roses. The writing is clear and emotionally moving at times, but there is nothing uplifting about this work, not at least, half way through. The author though telegraphs what is to happen far in advance. This has the advantage of no surprises, but also the disadvantage of no suspense. It is not great literature but is a page-turner, i.e., it does not make you think, but it does help make life bearable.
