About this product

Product Information

Five families. Three decades. One extraordinary era. As the decisions made in the corridors of power bring the world to the brink of oblivion, five families from across the globe are brought together in an unforgettable tale of passion and conflict during the Cold War. When Rebecca Hoffmann, a teacher in East Germany, finds herself pursued by the secret police, she discovers that she has been living a lie. Her younger brother, Walli, longs to escape across the Berlin Wall to Britain to become part of the burgeoning music scene. In the United States, George Jakes, a bright young lawyer in the Kennedy administration, is a fierce supporter of the Civil Rights movement - as is the woman he is in love with, Verena, who works for Martin Luther King, Jr. Boarding a Greyhound bus in Washington to protest against segregation, they begin a fateful journey together. Russian activist, Tania Dvorkin, narrowly evades capture for producing an illegal news sheet. Her actions are made all the more perilous as her brother, Dimka, is a rising star in the heart of the Communist Party in the Kremlin. From the deep south of America to the vast expanses of Siberia, from the shores of Cuba to the swinging streets of Sixties' London, Ken Follett's Edge of Eternity is a sweeping tale of the fight for individual freedom in a world gripped by the mightiest clash of superpowers anyone has ever known. *Includes family tree*

  • Brilliant and totally absorbing.

The Century trilogy makes for superb reading. The characters which run through the books are expertly described and brought to life and the storyline is very absorbing. The background is the troubled times which led to both world wars so; is full of drama. He makes the evolution of the Russian communist state absolutely understandable and what could have been a dull subject becomes totally absorbing. The same can be said for the rise of Hitler and all that followed. You would, of course, be well advised to read the three books in the correct chronoligcal order as characters are introduced in sequence and you would miss some of this skillfull writing. Kenn Follett knows how to grip the reader so don't be put off when you see that the books are thick: you will find them a very easy read and totally absorbing. The trilogy has been one of the best "reads" for me.

  • A Ken Follett masterpiece

I was so looking forward to reading this book. As it has over 1000 pages I needed to be sure I would have the time to give this book the attention it needed. It is very factual and quite illuminating on the events that occurred during my teen years. It made the conversations my parents had more understandable. Recommend this to the younger generation who have no idea what the world was like during the 60s. It wasn't all flower power and drugs!

  • An excellent end to the Follett trilogy

Having read books 1 & 2 of the trilogy, I had to get the 3rd book to hopefully finalise a fantastic collection of books based on fact and fiction it keeps the reader in touch with what happened to our ancestors (early pre first world war and onwards to date) pick out what you will but whatever I don't hesitate to recommend that everyone reads these excellent books The Edge of Eternity was a fabulous build up to an equally fabulous end.

  • Edge of Eternity

This is the last in the trilogy following families from Britain, Germany, Russia and the U.S..A. who live through the momentous events of the 20th century and how there lives become connected. A good read not to heavy and keeps your interest throughout . Well worth the investment in money and time .

  • A little disappointing end of a trilogy

I enjoyed the first 2 books in this series but struggled a little with this the 3rd. I started to not "care " about the characters which became more and more diverse and complicated. About halfway through this immense book, the British families were not mentioned and considering the 70- 80s timeframe nothing about the miners strike, the Falklands or the Thatcher government. Had Follett forgotten them?

  • Absorbing. It keeps you interested.

Third book in The Century trilogy. So you need to read the other two books first. Lots of historical detail if you like that sort of thing. Have to keep referring to the list of characters at front of book as there are quite a few but this does not put me off. Love the way Ken Follett writes.

  • Amazing read

This book is the last of a trilogy. All three books are page turners, the characters are interesting and you learn about history at the same time. The books are thick but you read them in no time
