A compelling yet down to earth exploration of prehistoric families and society.
As someone with an enthusiastic (but hardly academic) interest in the past, this well written book from Time Team stalwart Francis Pryor lays out very clear and detailed facts and theories about how people of the past lived and died. More specifically the book focuses on what the people themselves must have thought about their needs, beliefs and surrounding environment and how this impacted the ways in which they lived. The interpretation of what a home could have meant to people of the past offers a fascinating insight into a very different world. Francis writes in a very approachable and friendly style frequently offering personal thoughts and suggestions along the way. His dedication to looking at prehistoric society and culture from the bottom-up (as opposed to the traditional top-down) draws some fascinating and humbling conclusions.
If you think British history started with the Romans I would highly recommend this to you.
