The film follows Harvard scientist Dr Eddie Jessup (Hurt) as he begins experimenting with a sensory deprivation tank, using himself as the test subject. Under the influence of psychoactive drugs, he hallucinates back through stages of human evolution, altering his biological structure before emerging from the tank as a primitive killer. Despite the startling changes he's inflicting upon himself, Jessup appears determined to continue with his research and to delve deeper into his own consciousness.
