A Brief Revew of Burns' 25th Anniversery Edition of the Civil War
I first saw the series 25+ years ago on PBS, made some VHS copies and have viewed most of them a second time. With the Anniversary edition and my reading about the CW I am better acquainted with the history of the CW personae and the content of the series. Another viewing will involve more notes and further choices for reading, especially of soldiers and lesser characters. The series is worthy of a place in the library of any CW student. One difficulty is the absence in disc #2 of Session #3. It could not be lo0cated during the first viewing nor in a recent review of the disc. the search for Session #3 continually is a replay of Session #2, regardless of the manipulations. The Civil War 6 DVD set
The CDs do not look good on a large screen TV format. Not sure why this is. The sound needs to be adjusted to hear it. Much like a double line thing visually for the index,chapters. Using the laptop computer to reflect onto the TV screen produced a much better result. Buy at your own risk this set "fully restored". Perfect!!!
I have wanted this set of DVD's for quite sometime and I refused to pay $65 on the PBS website for them. This came in factory sealed, perfect condition. I ordered this set because it is a part of history that they are trying to hide from the young and I want my grandson to know what his ancestors went through, fought for and died for. It may be quite a few years before he is ready to watch this but it makes me feel good to know that he will know more about history than he is being taught in the school systems. A true historical document
I cannot say enough about how Ken Burns knocked this subject of our U.S. Civil War out of the park. I would also suggest buying the companion book that really compliments the dvds . Great product, good quality, I think Ken Burns best
I had originally taped from TV years ago and had some missing. I haven't had time to watch all of it but the quality is far superior than taping it on TV and I always love having captions. Can't wait to watch some of the special features. Colors and pictures are very sharp! A must in any Civil War collection.
I had recorded the series when it first aired. The quality was compromised and recording stops were erratic. The restored copy met all my expectations. There are no editing distractions, the story follows my understanding of the war with many valuable additions, and the interviews provided added and helpful commentary. Best Civil War Documentary Ever!
I purchased this DVD set to replace a VHS set I've had for years. I viewed this film when it first came out, and was profoundly influenced by it. Several of my ancestors fought in this war, so I had the added dimension of personal connections. I especially appreciated the multitude of personal narratives, letters, and photographs, which added greatly to relating the conflict to the everyday soldier or citizen, and their personal experiences. I highly recommend it to anyone with even a remote interest in the Civil War. Worth having in your dvd library
Shelby Foote, a southern civil war historian, is interviewed throughout this documentary. He has written several books on the event and has great personal insight. I saw this documentary when it originally aired, and I loved it then. Having recently visited several Civil War battlefields, I thought it would be a great thing to purchase this series and share it with my wife, who is working in building up her knowledge of history. Superb Civil War presentation
A remarkable, authentic, detailed depiction of the Civil War. Amazing accuracy and detailed account. Outstanding research. I learned far more than I ever knew.
