"Jane the Virgin" : The Season's Most Unexpected Delight
Golden Globe-winner Gina Rodriguez is a young charmer, in the demanding starring role of "Jane the Virgin;" and I predict that this 31-year-old actress just might be the next Sally Field. Yes, she's that good; and don't forget Sally got her start in TV sitcoms, at a much younger age (18, playing the 15-year-old Francis "Gidget" Lawrence). The improbable plot of this unique show: Jane, 23, who comes from a very religious Hispanic family, was accidentally artificially inseminated by her gynecologist. So, though she has never had sex, she finds herself pregnant. One of the unique elements of this addictive series: the English sub-titles for the Spanish-speaking cast members (including Jane's grandmother). In one episode, there were even English translations for a barking dog! Cute, huh? Jane has a lot on her plate (to say the least). Besides her complicated love life (the father of her unborn child has fallen in love with her, though she initially rejects his marriage proposal; and her patient ex-boyfriend still secretly has feelings for her), she is meanwhile juggling jobs as a teacher and a cocktail waitress, but what she really wants to be is a writer. Her writings sometimes appear as on-screen captions--and there's also a narrator with a thick Spanish accent (who speaks English). Like I said, this is a complex--but thoroughly engaging--show. And it's Rodriguez who ably pulls it off.
