Roland UM ONE Midi/USB Interface excellent product.
There are cheaper versions of this item but quite simply, they don't work!! I suspect it's to do with the rate at which data is transferred. Although the Roland UM ONE is quite a bit dearer it works superbly and connects midi components and PC etc via USB quickly and easily. I have used it to transfer guitar effects patches to a Boss GT 8 and a Beat Buddy drum machine to record midi to PC with excellent results. This device works a treat when the cheap USB MIDI interfaces had completely failed to do the job I needed. I needed a device to upload bulk MIDI data from a Linux PC to a Korg device and the cheap interfaces were scrambling the data. This Roland unit worked flawlessly and revived an old synthesizer. Top quality and won't wreck your gadgets.
Unlike the cheap usb-din midi gadgets here on eBay, this one has the mandatory opto-isolation on its input side. Midi specifications demand this (go look it up). You will not find opto-isolation in any of the cheap units. Use one of those and you can end up frying your precious musical gizmos. The Volkswagon of the MIDI world!
I previously bought a cheap USB/MIDI interface to save a few pounds, and guess what? It didn't work. I then did some research and bought one that had a wealth of top reviews, and for good reason. The UM-ONE works perfectly. I have used it to connect my aging KORG M1 to my laptop after several internal repairs and a battery change. After struggling with the cheap generic interface, I was beginning to lose heart and thought my beloved keyboard may never be the same again. But I bit the bullet, bought the Roland UM-ONE and BINGO! The drivers took a while to install, but bear with it. Once installed and connected as instructed, I was able to re-install factory defaults to the M1, and use the MIDI connections as they were originally designed. Roland UM-One Midi Host
I am writing this review as I originally purchased a cheaper (much cheaper) version of this, not from this supplier I might add. The cheaper products that do this job, as I found from reviews after I puchased one, do not work. This Roland device is absolutely perfect, it does a great job and is very easy to install. It does help that this comes with a disk and instructions, you will find that cheaper products have no disk or instructions with them. If you need to MIDI a device up to your PC and/or like me need to be able to play the device from another MIDI hosted device, via your PC and Sound Production software like a DAW, rather than direct, this product will do the job and do it very well.
