  • Rubbish production and design redeemed by good singing.

I wanted an up to date DVD of Manon Lescaut but unfortunately this does production is very poor. Does the director actually like opera?!!! I am not against moving an opera to modern times as long as it is done well, which this certainly does not. As for the set designer, it looks as if he went down to the local scrapyard and collected whatever he could find. The set design for the first two acts were not too bad, although very dark, but they became progressively worse for Acts 3 and 4, with the final act apparently on a broken motorway flyover. The only redeeming feature were the two lead singers who did the best they could with the production they were given
