I just bought a new laptop with a 1tb hard drive, so I decided I needed more storage for backup purposes too. I wanted a cheap 3 TB USB drive to use with my laptop. I ran across this drive and the price was right so I bought it. When it came it was very heavy and larger than what I thought it was. In the picture it was hard to tell how big it was with nothing else in the frame to compare it to. It reminds me of the older desktop hard drives and the older thick USB cd drives. It's not really for packing around with you everywhere like the small 2.5 USB drives and enclosures. This one is intended to sit on your desk next to your computer. The next disappointment was that it is stamped on the bottom recertified, so that means it was a refurb and that wasn't mentioned in the ad for it. The next disappointment is that for it to work you have to plug it in to a power supply to provide the 12 volts for it to work. It won't power from your USB. So there goes the chance to use it on the laptop while on battery power on the go. Lastly I plugged it into my USB 3.0 port and transferred about 8 GB of data to it. It took literally forever. I believe USB 1 would have transferred the data quicker. So it's slow, big, and heavy and not for battery laptop use. I will still make use of it but just not as I originally intended. 3TB is just too much capacity to pass up at the price I got this for even to despite it's obvious drawbacks. Read full review

Write speed is okay, read speed could be faster. Of course I'm doing all this on a USB 2.0, so 3.0 would surely be faster, but I had hoped Seagate would have added higher rpm as well and not just rely on 3.0 that not everyone has yet. Seagate isn't new to this game, so for them to put out a plain, boring box like this should've been embarrassing. Especially since they've had such beautifully designed enclosures before. Did their one design guy die or what? Don't they make enough profit to replace him? I know it's going on the back of the desk, but it's ugly and I find myself hiding it. Aside from all that; I don't think it should cost more than $45 per TB today, and this fits the bill. This is an excellent value for the money.
I PURCHASED THIS PRODUCT BECAUSE THE HARD DRIVE IN MY COMPUTER AT HOME IS 160 GIG AND IT IS NEAR CAPACITY. WITH THIS PRODUCT, I HAVE MOVED SOME DATA, PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO THIS EXTERNAL DRIVE FREEING MORE SPACE FOR ITEMS PROCESSED DIRECTLY BY THE HARD DRIVE OF THE COMPUTER. VERY EASY TO INSTALL. HUGE STORAGE FOR DATA, PHOTOS AND VIDEOS. VERY PORTABLE. THE PRICE, PORTABILITY AND EASY OF INSTALLATION MAKES THIS PRODUCT SECOND TO NONE.
I record antenna TV programs. This is the fourth Seagate 3TB external hard drive that I have purchased. When coupled with my Channel Master DVR+ it allows me the record up to 400 hours of programming for playback at a later time. I can move the Seagate between my different CM DVRs for playback at our country house. I also have four of the Channel Master DVR+ antenna TV recording devices. This same item when purchased thru Channel Master is triple the price that I have been able to find on eBay. The Black Friday special or the following Monday are the times to buy the Channel Master DVR+ and the other two required components (the USB wifi stick and the HDMI cord) direct from Channel Master to get the most affordable pricing and free shipping.

Overall, this external drive works well. It does what it should do. However, I ran a speed test and its read/write/access speed performance was okay but not great. This may partly be due to it running only at 5400 RPM. Maybe. This unit should be fine for archiving and backing up where you need moderate speed but don't need to backup loads of data in a hurry. For the latter, I'd suggest looking for a higher spec'd drive. Hope that helps.
This 3TB HDD is another great product form Seagate. I only use Seagate hard drives and this product it a testament as to why. It is solid built, quieter than any other hard drive I have, works great with my USB 3.0 ports, and is simple to set up. I bought it for more space and now I couldn't be happier. Also, with Seagates awesome warranty and support it's a no lose situation. Great buy for anyone who wants a top quality piece of equipment to use for extra storage or even main storage. Thanks Seagate for another fantastic product.
This product will allow Windows XP users to add 3 TB of storage to their systems. Because of System limitations, XP can only address 2 TB of a Hard Drive. This drive can be configured as a 2 TB volume and a ~1 TB volume that will work with XP. Later models of the Seagate Expansion USB hard drives larger than 2 TB will NOT work with XP (without modification of the drive volumes using appropriate software on another computer running Windows 7 or later.)

Bought one brand new a while back and worked fine. Has good storage space. I wouldn't recommend it anymore. Recently its been corrupting my image files. By putting blue streaks in the images. Images are not recoverable. This is annoying since its suppose to be a backup drive and the drive doesn't really get use often. I would recommended multiple copy backups instead of relying on a single backup copy if people decide to use this drive.

I currently am running 30 TB 24/7 on my system. 80% of these drives are Seagate. I have been buying Seagate drives for 20+ years. I have had only one drive failure and that was the drive controller / interface PC board inside a 3 TB Seagate Extension drive (7200 RPM) case 1 month after the warrantee ran out. Seagate Technical Support has no parts department and could not get me a replacement PC board. Fortunately I found new Seagate cases with PC boards, power cords, and 3.0 patch cords on eBay. I still buy ONLY Seagate Expansion or External drives and bare drives for inside my computer cases, preferably 7200 rpm, because you can tell the speed difference on a USB 3.0 system.
I am glad that I purchased this Segate 2TB External drive product. The price I paid was a bonus! I highly recommend it!
