An Excellent Offering From Taylor
The 224 CE Koa Deluxe is another great offering from Taylor! Yes, Koa wood is wonderful to look at but most importantly it is an incredible tone wood! As Koa ages it continually takes on more character, complexity and depth. This is the 3rd Koa wood instrument I own and I firmly believe that the extra cost, due to low supply is well worth it.
While it's true that only the top is solid Koa wood on this model, Taylor's process of layered wood for the sides and back (not plywood & veneer - check their website for the full explanation) lowers the price point dramatically. Their all solid Koa wood guitars start @ $4,999 and for me, this changed my dream of owning a Koa wood Taylor into a reality.
While I've read mixed reviews on Taylor's ES2 pickup system, I can only say that my guitar sounds wonderful when plugged in. I wonder if Taylor didn't make some tweaks after initial complaints. Also, my guitar was setup and adjusted properly by a Taylor trained, highly skilled luthier. This includes adjustments of the pickups located behind the saddle. As with any instrument, proper setup and adjustment is crucial to getting the most from the instrument. This point is often overlooked when people buy online from clearing houses to save a few bucks.
I like where the volume / tone controls are set and the battery box located near the back strap button is convenient. Some have complained that it doesn't have a "Low Z" / 3 pin connection but I find them annoying on guitars due to the larger connection ends tend to catch or get knocked easily. I much prefer a quality 1/4" cable with a 90-degree angle plugged into my guitar and then plugged into a board, amp or DI box if need be.
The ebony fingerboard is perfect and the radius makes the guitar a pleasure to play. While I'm not certain why, not all of the Koa 224 CE's I played / considered had gold toned tuning machines but mine does and I feel they look best with Koa wood. As with all Taylor guitars, the high-quality case to protect my investment on those rare occasions it leaves my home is appreciated.
To sum things up, I'm thrilled with my new Taylor and know that with proper care, it will last me a lifetime.
