    Significantly better than expected

The pulley block system doesn't look much in the picture and I was a bit dubious it would work, but when it arrived it was clear it was solid and well built. It comes ready fitted with 20m of 6mm corded rope, but in a four pulley system that doesn't equate to a big lifting distance - only about 2.5m - and I needed about double that. The natural direction of the twist in the corded rope also makes the pulley system prone to twisting, so in replacing the cord with a longer piece of rope (50m) I bought 6mm braided rope, which doesn't have the issue with twisting, and it worked a treat. I was using the 300kg rated pulley system and the most unexpected issue was that there is considerable resistance in the pulley system so the lower block will not descend unaided without a weight on it. Easily fixed by pulling the cord manually and placing a weight (10kg) on the lower hook to add some tension to the system. When using the block you must maintain good practice with the rope or it will become tangled and you will spend more time untangling it than doing the job - good preparation is essential. A really solid bit of kit that did the job.

  • Most critical review

    Useless product

The mechanical advantage to be gained by the multi pulley system was more than negated by the excessive friction in this system. With any weight over a few kilos the pulleys locked up. Perhaps the cord used now is slightly too large diameter compared to that used in original. The cord is effectively braked by the sides of the pulleys. But I am not being paid to offer design advice. Useless for lifting almost any weight. I would have given zero stars if allowed.

  • Good value for infrequent use

This is a product I will use infrequently. It did the job (lifting a 55kg outboard engine) and is good value for the price. The quality reflects its price and I suspect it is one of the better ones on the market for that price. If I was going to use it every day I would go more upmarket - maybe a block and tackle. Most reviews criticize the rope and rightly so, but it still works.

  • Decent pulley for the money

Bought this pulley for deer gralloch and it seems decent. Not used yet but will definitely make the task easier. Bought a gambrel separately. Also bought a caribiner separately which I had intended to use to hang the pulley but this is not needed as “opening metal clasps” are supplied top and bottom of the pulley. Seems a good purchase

  • heavy duty with adequate capacity

the pulleys are heavy duty metal the rope is nylon braided and is a good length arrived promptly and well packaged will do the job with lifting capacity to spare should last a long time

  • Very useful rope hoist

The Mannesmann rope hoist was bought to carry out a specific job, to lift a concrete splash board slab between two 6ft fence posts. This was managed "one handed" and job completed in a short time. Rope hoist suspended with a "jury rig" goalpost timber construction.

  • Well made

Well made and effective item at reasonable price. Marked down because advertised as nylon cord, and marked as such on packaging, but actually polypropylene cord.
