  • First Lathe

I have been watching videos of woodturning on YouTube and really fancied having a go, so ordered this as it looked good value. It arrived quickly and was easy to assemble, and it’s pretty quiet. I’ve turned quite a few things with it now and found it to be easy to use. There are a few negatives: The on/off switch broke after 1 day, but I got in touch with lumberjack direct and had a new one arrive in the post 2 days later. The construction quality isn’t great (but you get what you pay for) and it’s hard to align the two pieces of the lathe bed accurately. Consequently it’s hard to move the tailstop around. The tailstop bends outward very easily when you’re tightening against a piece of work, I’ll modify mine by welding on some extra supports. This isn’t necessary really, but it’s not a great design as it comes. Throw the tools it comes with in the bin. They’re soft and need to be sharpened every time you even look at them, and I’d go so far as to say they’re dangerous to use. That’s the only downsides I have found to what is otherwise a great product, and at £150 it’s not exactly a lot of money to start out woodturning. It is a STARTER lathe after all!

  • Surprisingly useful

Turns out that this is a sturdy, reliable and serviceable little lathe, and it's a LOT better than I had expected. The three tools supplied were hopeless and needed sharpening straight out of the box but apart from that I would say this is a good little machine for learners through to medium level hobbyists who want to have a go at making trinkets If you're interested in turning small items - mushrooms, pens, spindles, Christmas tree decorations, spinning tops, stair rods, handles and smaller pots and bowls then this one could well be what you're looking for. You'll need something more robust if you want to play around with whole trees, though, or if you want to make canoes. Or park benches...

  • Good quality lathe at reasonable price

Good solid robust product seems to work ok but only little use so far downside instructions unclear and tools not best quality but as a beginner ideal starter

  • No real complaints

It dose exactly what it’s meant to, turn wood. For the grand price of £159 I can’t complain as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. So as far as a review here’s the good and the bad. The good: Dead easy to set up. Easy to change the speed via the belt enclosure Good sturdy construction No vibration Low noise The bad: Tools supplied are ok but, buy new ones there not expensive On mine the ways where not straight. Though easy for me to sort. The tail stock has odd movement when you tighten a workpiece (not a major issue) The instructions are poor at best. But there’s nothing to using the lathe. All in all I can’t complain this seems to be a superb starter lathe. Am new to wood turning, though I turn metal they are remarkably different. I plan on making some custom adjustments but not because it needs them. I want to make a drill chuck tail stock attachment. If you want a cheap new lathe that you don’t have to travel 100s of miles for then the Lumberjack SWL 350 is the lathe for you. I feel I must add though that this is not the machine for the seasoned pro.

  • Wood lathe

I have given this machine a 5 star rating, it's an excellent machine to use very stable once it has been bolted down. I find all the equipment that came with it very very useful, very excellent machine.

  • 5star product for the beginner.

As a beginner, this lathe is amazing. It does more than I expected, but the tools that come with it are good quality but not brilliant. 5 star product and very quick delivery.

  • Good entry model lathe.

It is lower quality of finishes and accuracy compared to what I am used to at a much lower price. The instruction manual is very poor and desperately needs re-writing.

  • with two days of use found two screws on moter lose when try to tighten found threads stripped

it is a good hobby tool but there are vibration problems even with mounting it on cushions to reduce this, works well on small things
