A Cut Above
As I'm not sponsored by any of the big tool companies (or any of the small ones for that matter!) I tend to buy tools as I need them and to fit my budget at the time. Consequently, I ended up with a comprehensive range, all from different manufacturers At one point that meant I had several different batteries and their associated chargers in regular use. Nonsense, even for a hobbyist so I started to streamline a bit and limit myself to one range. Well two, not entirely through choice but there you go, still much better than it was.
Although not cordless, I was reluctant to part with my Festool TS55. It really is a fantastic machine and one I put to good use when setting up a home workshop but find I was hardly using at all now. I received two offers I couldn't refuse and so I sold the Festool and used the cash to buy this model from DeWalt - just in case.
To be perfectly honest, I didn't really expect a codless tool to come anywhere near to the Festools capabilities. That said, I have to admit I didn't notice this was part of DeWalt's Flexvolt range. This wasn't too much of an issue for me as I already own 54v batteries, part of the reason behind my decision to rationalise on my range of powertools. And it maybe the extra juice these batteries offer that enable it to cut like the proverbial hot knife through butter. Furthermore, I'm finding the lack of a mains cable to snag on guide rail / workpiece / workbench / absolutely anything a real boon to making long continuous cuts quickly and easily. This kit, comprising of the saw itself, robust case, 1.5m guide rail and a neat case to store that in, cust less then two-thirds of the cost of the TS55 on its own. In addition, the guide accepts my existing rail clamps and right angle guide although once in place it tends to hold its position even without clamps.
It is much better than I expected but I've neither owned it nor used it long enough to make a long term view of it hence the four stars
