The first two series followed the trials and tribulations of Hugo Abbot, a lowly MP who finds himself continually harassed by the PMÆs policy enforcer Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi). The third series saw Nicola Murray (Rebecca Front) MP, replace Hugh as Head of DoSAC. Whereas the forth series sees a reverse in fortune for Nicola, Malcolm and Ollie Reeder (Chris Addison), with the government and opposition having switched places after the last election. With Nicola somehow now leader of the opposition, the episodes swing back and forth between her beleaguered team and Peter Mannion's (Roger Allam) feuding new coalition.
