About this product

Product Information

'Ever since we came home with Thula, this precious magical kitten has cast a spell over Iris. They sit beside each other as Iris paints, and new doorways to communication have been opened, doors we had previously feared might be locked forever.' Iris Grace is six years old and severely autistic. For the first few years of her life she barely communicated at all - she hardly ever looked up when her parents walked into a room, she rarely smiled or spoke. Her mother Arabella despaired - Iris seemed to be trapped in her own world, unreachable. Then one day the family decided to get a cat, Thula, with whom Iris had an immediate affinity. She appeared to open up and communicate with Thula in a way that she hadn't done before. The little girl who seemed to be lost in her own world slowly blossomed. Iris is an extraordinarily gifted artist who sees the world in a profoundly vivid and visceral way, and with Thula by her side, she will sit and paint for hours. This book isn't the story of a genius or child prodigy (although Iris is almost certainly both of those things), this is the story of how a remarkable bond between a cat and a child saved a family. Beautifully written, readers will be spellbound by the story of Iris Grace and her devoted pet cat Thula.

Words cannot describe the feeling this book gives you. It is not depressing. It is warm and inspiring. If you do not read any other book this year, read this one. It will enrich your life, especially if your child is autistic. Her mum and dad could not try harder to place themselves in her world and try and bring her out of it. They have succeeded. I am looking forward to finishing this book, and will buy the follow up without any 2nd thoughts. I wish this little girl and her mum and dad all the very best for the future. I know they have a life time of hard work, but I know it will and is paying off for them. And the addition to the family, of the cat. Why don't you start your own school for autistic children and try and help individuals to reach their children, instead of mainstreaming and forcing and upsetting this talented children ? Jill x

  • Understanding Autism.

I am currently doing a course about understanding autism and Arabella Carter Johnson is a contributor on the course. As a result I was curious to read her book all about her experiences with her daughter. I haven’t finished yet but so far I have found it well written, informative and very insightful. There are beautiful illustrations to accompany the text. I would recommend this book.

  • Fascinating in every way.

First and foremost this book tells us of the devotion of parents for their child. That devotion is absolute .. their search to find a way for Iris Grace to flourish is one of the most moving accounts I've ever read. Iris Grace's art is quite extraordinary and should be celebrated .. and this book does just that - it celebrates each individual painting with superb photography (Arabella is a professional photographer) which is reproduced on high quality paper so that we, the readers, can fully appreciate the beauty. And then the amazing Thula - an unforgettable little cat who has reached Iris Grace in a way that only an animal can. So another celebration .. the magical relationship between child and cat. I've rationed myself to 4 pages at a time .. despite a temptation to keep turning pages .. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for any parent, for any art lover and for any animal lover. And if you're none of these things to start with, then surely you will be in a very short time! Right now, it's just an arm's distance from me .. I will keep it there for easy access for a very long time. It's wonderful.
