THE SUNDAY TIMES TOP 10 BESTSELLER. WINNER OF THE 2015 COSTA FIRST NOVEL AWARD. THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2016. A brilliantly unsettling and atmospheric debut full of unnerving horror - 'The Loney is not just good, it's great. It's an amazing piece of fiction' Stephen King Two brothers. One mute, the other his lifelong protector. Year after year, their family visits the same sacred shrine on a desolate strip of coastline known as the Loney, in desperate hope of a cure. In the long hours of waiting, the boys are left alone. And they cannot resist the causeway revealed with every turn of the treacherous tide, the old house they glimpse at its end . . . Many years on, Hanny is a grown man no longer in need of his brother's care. But then the child's body is found. And the Loney always gives up its secrets, in the end. 'This is a novel of the unsaid, the implied, the barely grasped or understood, crammed with dark holes and blurry spaces that your imagination feels compelled to fill' Observer 'A masterful excursion into terror' The Sunday Times

  • The Loney yawn yawn

I'm on page 243 of a 360 page book and nothing seems to have happened yet that's worth another page turn. I'm having to force myself to lift the book and read it which for me is quite sad as I'm an absolute book worm and have been all my life. I'm hoping something happens soon or I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and put it back on the bookshelf and call it a day. But I hate leaving a book unfinished 😞

  • Very atmospheric read.

  • quite deep.

Very flawed characters, but it made me research the area it was set in. The writer certainly makes you feel the dark loneliest of the area I won't say it was riveting but I certainly can recommend it as a good read.

  • derivative and disappointing

Knowing that this book was a Costa winner and had received rave reviews meant that I was greatly looking forward to reading it. I found that the plot and remote rural setting were borrowed from The Wicker Man, but in no way matched up. It was said to be set in the mid 70s, but described a world which seemed totally 1950s, and there was a pointless obsession with silly names, Mummer and Farther (was this supposed to be meaningful?) and Mr and Mrs Belderboss, etc. Why? An unsatisfactory conclusion in which all the supposed build up of horror dribbled away into nothing left me wishing I really hadn't wasted my time. Haunting it was not.
