The Loney yawn yawn
I'm on page 243 of a 360 page book and nothing seems to have happened yet that's worth another page turn. I'm having to force myself to lift the book and read it which for me is quite sad as I'm an absolute book worm and have been all my life. I'm hoping something happens soon or I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and put it back on the bookshelf and call it a day. derivative and disappointing
Knowing that this book was a Costa winner and had received rave reviews meant that I was greatly looking forward to reading it. I found that the plot and remote rural setting were borrowed from The Wicker Man, but in no way matched up. It was said to be set in the mid 70s, but described a world which seemed totally 1950s, and there was a pointless obsession with silly names, Mummer and Farther (was this supposed to be meaningful?) and Mr and Mrs Belderboss, etc. Why? An unsatisfactory conclusion in which all the supposed build up of horror dribbled away into nothing left me wishing I really hadn't wasted my time.
