Very interesting read.
I really enjoyed this book. My main criticism is that the dates and author's age at the various stages documented throughout are not made clear. It is therefore hard to relate Quillen's experiences at that age and time. Other than that, it's a great read. I would recommend it.

Brilliant book to learn about the Alcatraz!
We went Alcatraz this Easter holiday. My son, 10 years old was very curious about this jail and wanted to learn more. We bought this book for his 11th birthday and he really enjoyed reading. Won't recommend to read before going to bed though. lots of interesting things you can learn from this book.

I learned about Jim Quillan when I visited Alcatraz, his story of life in high security prisons was harrowing. He was a bad lad, a tough guy, but he turned his life around, respect is due.
