"You might have watched the documentary Blackfish. This is more powerful...." --Psychology Today"A heart-tugging look at the lives of orca whales in captivity." --People"I highly recommend Beneath the Surface to readers of all ages, including those youngsters about whom Hargrove writes, who want to be just like him when he trained orcas to perform stupid and unnatural tricks. Hargrove is a very courageous man, and his book is open and honest and we should all thank him for taking the time to write it." --Marc Bekoff, The Huffington Post"A story of both dread and wonderment... books such as this have the ability to shine a light into the inner workings of corporate greed and redirect efforts from selling tickets to preserving, nurturing and enhancing the orcas' lives." --The Huffington Post"Elaborates on...

  • Breathtaking and Eye Opening

Wow... where do I even begin. I was once the same small child captivated by the magic and in awe of the orca and trainer relationship at seaworld in Florida even up to my adult life until i watched Blackfish and began to reading this book. Its only now that i realise human ignorance and our love for entertainment that i realise we are a cruel species. This book is eye opening to the horror that captivity can cause for the animals and the trainers working them. A wonderful insight into the life as a trainer, the life of a captive orca. Some lovely memories from johns trainer days but filled with realism that truly, these whales dont really live... they exist to entertain and make a hefty profit for the companies that exploit them and their trainers. I will definitely be reading this again. One of my best buys!

  • Powerful and insightful read

Really establishes just how little we know about orcas, just how little we knew about Seaworld and how easy it is to become distracted by the glory of it all and become blind to the suffering these poor animals endure.
