About this product

Product Information

Bill Bryson's travels in a sunburned country- Australia will never look the same again. It is the driest, flattest, hottest, most desiccated, infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents and still Australia teems with life - a large portion of it quite deadly. In fact, Australia has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way than anywhere else. Ignoring such dangers - and yet curiously obsessed by them - Bill Bryson journeyed to Australia and promptly fell in love with the country. And who can blame him? The people are cheerful, extrovert, quick-witted and unfailingly obliging- their cities are safe and clean and nearly always built on water; the food is excellent; the beer is cold and the sun nearly always shines. Life doesn't get much better than this.

  • Bryson at his best.....

As always, Bill Bryson never let's you down. His witty and informative text lives up to his name. Even the most boring facts are turned into something really interesting and you don't want to put the book down until the very last word. Even though I have never shown much interest in travelling to Australia, I feel like I was with him every inch of the way. Highly recommended.

  • Beuatifully written with an ease that allows the reader to visualise the content personally.

Absorbing book both funny and factual.

  • Good in parts

Informative but Bryson's humour is about on the level of a 12 year old and the personal encounters are dull. I didn't notice this in the much superior 'A Walk in the Woods'.
