Earlier in the year, I dithered over whether to buy this or a Sigma 70-200 and 2x teleconveter. I opted for the latter which was a mistake for though the Sigma is a lovely lens, it is autofocus only (I'd never experienced a lens with no manual option so hadn't even looked for that feature) and I found that whatever mode, autofocus couldn't cope with what I wanted to do at the higher zoom end. I kept the Sigma - like I said, it's lovely and IS brilliant for closer subjects that aren't whizzing about unpredictably and/or a background the autofocus knows what to focus on - and bought this for the higher end zoom work. So far I've used it twice and have been very pleased with the results, despite being on a learning curve for using such a weighty lens and the frustrations of such a narrow field of view i.e. "Where did it (the subject) go?" but when those are overcome, it delivers the quality expected of a Nikon lensRead full review

Excellent product as you would expect from Nikon, focus is fast, the VR system is really good, and the lens produces top quality images. Only downside and it is a problem with almost all ultra zoom lenses, is it is heavy, like really heavy. 2.3 KG may not sound like too much, but after a few hours at an air display, or out on a photo shoot, you will notice the weight. Ok, that is only an issue if you are using it hand held, monopods I don`t rate them really, and shooting aircraft on a tripod just doesn`t work for me. Just remember to set it down gently, and often to rest your shoulder and arms.

This lens I recommend is very sharp, relatively fast focus, excellent VR. If someone wants to shoot without a tripod, it is necessary to start a fitness center. The weight of 2.3 kg plus camera is known after an hour of photography. It's such a small strengthening. I recommend.

Some success with elusive wildlife already. Amazed that Nikon have produced a telephoto lens that doesn't require taking out a mortgage. Have always had Nikon DSLR cameras but could not afford a Nikon telephoto of this focal length.

Best used with some support like a monopole or tripod as it is heavy when hand held after 8 hours walking and taking motorsport and wildlife pictures. Can be a little slow at autofocus on occasions but pin sharp at 500mm. A great compromise if ( Like me) you can't afford a full set of prime lenses across this range. Great colour reproduction and no vignetting. Highly recommend this lens.
