ReviewsThis book in the Enslow "Explorers" series focuses on Ferdinand Magellan, the first explorer to lead an expedition around the world. Author Bourgeois Molzahn begins with Magellan's Adventures at Sea, when, in 1505, he sailed on one of five Portuguese ships to the harbor of Malacca in Malaysia. Magellan and the rest of the ship's crew were eager to capture the city and gain control of the spice trade. The Malacca people fought off the Portuguese sailors, but Magellan was rewarded by Portugal for his bravery. He was given command of a ship. Chapters two through six focus on Magellan's early years growing up in Portugal, his interest in geography and science, and his adult life as an explorer. Magellan had several exciting adventures, but his biggest adventure was to come. After serving the King of Portugal for many years, he asked him if he could go to another country and serve a different King. Magellan went to Spain and asked the king to give him ships and money so he could bring back riches to Spain. He set off to find a sea passage to the Spice Islands. In 1520, Magellan found a narrow passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and named it the Strait of All Saints. Later it was renamed the Strait of Magellan. Magellan died in a battle on the island of Mactan and did not go all the way around the world nor did he find the Spice Islands. But he is remembered as the first person to lead an expedition around the world and one who helped other explorers continue their search. Good colorful illustrations, Internet information, and other reference information add to the contents of this readable book., Children's Literature
