Tillgangen till de tryckta skeppslistorna foer Goeteborg fran 1781 och framat (med vissa luckor) ger en god moejlighet att analysera bland annat agarstrukturen och sjoefartskonjunkturen. Undersoekningsperioden har i denna studie i huvudsak begransats till 1782-1820, men aven en del aldre skeppslistor behandlas. Jamfoert med idag var flertalet stora redare under den aktuella tiden inte specialiserade pa fraktfart utan hade en bredd i sin verksamhet som strackte sig oever import och export, agande av olika produktionsanlaggningar, penningutlaning och fastighetsaffarer.
