About this product

Product Information

Banished to Slough House from the ranks of achievers at Regent's Park for various crimes of drugs and drunkenness, lechery and failure, politics and betrayal, Jackson Lamb's misfit crew of highly trained joes don't run ops, they push paper. But not one of them joined the Intelligence Service to be a 'slow horse'. A boy is kidnapped and held hostage. His beheading is scheduled for live broadcast on the net. And whatever the instructions of the Service, the slow horses aren't going to just sit quiet and watch . . .

    What a Debut!

I guess I'm fairly predictable in my reading....."Thrillers"! Jeffery Deaver, Michael Connolly,Lee Child , Ian Rankin and David Baldacci with the odd Robert Harris thrown in here and there. My son is a crime novel blogger and recommended that I have a look at this one. So here goes :- Writing style : I reckon I know, within the first 2 pages, whether I will enjoy an author and, in this case it took less than that. His style is easy to read, with a wry wit bubbling just below the surface. Not too highbrow but certainly not dumbed down. The Story : Possibly spent a little too long building up the characters for what was obviously intended to be the first book in a series but, once it got going, it was well up there in the realms of the unputdownable. Several innovative twists on the theme of UK government inter-departmental wranglings with significant play on the "Sacrificial Lamb" idea, all coming to the kind of conclusion which makes you want to order the next book in the series 20 pages before you finish this one. Potential : So, the stage is set, the players firmly implanted in your mind, bring it on. Can't wait to start the next one. Summary : A brilliant first novel by a new author who will certainly have space on my book case for whatever he comes up with. A good excuse to chuck out some more Patricia Cornwells!

    VERY DISAPPOINTING

Mick Herron does not manage convincingly either the short, snappy, pacy style nor the descriptive style, often long, slow and turgid. Both styles seem forced and unnatural. I tried the book three times but that is now that - next stop Oxfam.

  • New slant on 'spy' novels

Fantastic read could not put it down have the others in the series on my shopping list. The books question is 'what to do with MI5 OR MI6 agents when they make cock ups?'The answer is a great read, the characters are great as well although some of their names need getting used to.

  • Spy Book

Unusual style of writing (to me) and sometimes lost th thread of it but stuck with it and quite enjoyed it. Not sure if I will try the next one though at the moment.

  • Great read

A great read. The tv series follows the book really closely but the book gives a greater insight into the main characters and what they are thinking.
