Allende is a great crafter of a novel. I loved her early work but predictability has crept into her later books. Compared with lesser novelists, she is still a good read but this one feels like familiar themes. I didn't finish this book, nor the one about redemptive love in later life. I truly believe that some writers have only one or two great books in them, and they are enough. I'm grateful for the great books - It's not fair to expect consistency!
