AT LP5 IPT
The AT LP5 IPT has been bought as a vinyl front end for a second system in my house. It unpacked and built up with remarkable speed for those used to the fussy set up of the many so-called super decks. Fit platter to spindle, drop mat onto platter, balance tone-arm, and add 2 grams of VTF by rotating the Rega RB202 weight one full turn, (1 gram per 180 degree of rotation) Plug in the supplied good quality interconnect, selected the on-board Phono stage, attached the kettle lead, and I was ready to go.
From the off, I found that the step down (from my LP12 /SME reference) that I had expected, was nowhere near as significant as I might have thought. In fact, there was a kindness to surface noise, and a naturalness that took me quite by surprise, but this came with no apparent lack of drive and attack.
To try the deck, I dug out a favorite record, and a great test for any source. The opening track on side two of the fabulous1973 debut Billy Cobham album ‘Spectrum’ is underpinned by a real groove of a bass line laid down by Lee Sklar. On this track, Cobham’s masterful and ground breaking drumming rolls and twists its way, serpent like, around an immaculate, and rock solid bass groove. This propels the track in a manner that must have been an inspiration (and influence) to Sly and Robbie in their later illustrious career?
The AT LP5 IPT turntable at this point immediately impressed me with its un-erring pinning down of the timing of this complex musical interplay, where the metronomic bassline is brought into a classic Jazz (Fusion?) tension by the minute and subtle chasing ahead, and slowing down of Cobham’s complex rhythmically timed conversation with Sklar. This really was a great start.
At one point, the lead guitar work by Tommy Brolin was, self evidently, emanating from well outside of the left hand speaker. A feat quite remarkable that the prosaic (if already well respected) AT 95E cartridge was able to enhance its giant killer status in this modest context, it could not have been more impressive than right here.
To say I'm pleased with the turntable would be an understatement, I am absolutely loving how good it is, and may have to sneak it in to my reference system, but daren't in case it shames my Linn LP12!
Thanks Simon for this great new turntable, is it the best kept vinyl secret out there?
