Nice unit but MP3 instructions are confusing and use of MP3 functions is not intuitive

The unit is nice but I almost returned it because of the difficulty in figuring out how to use the MP3 functions. That section of the instructions is poorly written. Those instructions refer to non-existent button labels, grammatical errors ("record" instead of "recorded"), confusing wording, apparently reversed words ("Tape" and "MP3") and I'm still not 100% sure of that. Why would I play music on a cassette tape in order to record from MP3 to tape? That's why I think that "Tape" and "MP3" are reversed. It took me a long time to go through each step of the MP3 functions to familiarize myself with them but I would still need my marked-up instructions for anything involving MP3, SD card, and USB (the instructions say "U") functions, the controls of which are so closely grouped at the bottom front of the unit that I managed to inadvertently delete my MP3 files several times from my USB drive and SD card while trying to figure out how the MP3 functions work. Make sure that you have a backup copy on another device for any MP3 file that you want to play or record to the cassette tape. The hole labeled "MP3 MIC" is not for inserting a microphone jack. I tried that and realized my mistake before causing any damage. It is for direct MP3 voice recording to USB drive or SD card, a nice feature. Because the radio tuning scale is quite recessed, the FM band tuning scale at the top of the chassis cannot be read unless you view it at eye level. The sound volume can be turned up to boombox loud with good fidelity.

  • Most critical review

review update: tape drive quit after 2 weeks. this really is junk. dont buy one

this is a very basic item. has built in mike but note there are no jacks for plugging in an external mike or sound source (such as cd player) sound is good but not great. volume is very acceptable and has 3 tone controls (bass, mid-range, treble). Reception is equal to or slightly better than comparable units I own. I also have a higher end unit by same manufacturer on which tape player quit after a few months. I am sure all parts are plastic. i wanted a compact unit to sit on my night table and play tapes. this does that very satisfactorily so I got what I paid for but cannot recommend it if you want more. does not have automatic shut tape off. instructions are minimal and in spanish and english.

  • Power supply caution!!

Overall fair value for the price but spoiled by scanty operating instructions. There is a caution to connect to correct power supply, however many people are used to devices selecting input power automatically (eg shavers). I live in a country with 220 V AC supply and looked to see if there was a power select switch - I didn't find one but should have looked further .......... there was no mention of this switch in the printed instructions but inside the battery compartment there is a slide switch to select between 110 and 220 V, this was set to 110 V as default. Having not seen this I connected to the mains and switched on - BANG, I promptly burnt out the power transformer!! OK, my fault, perhaps I should have looked more diligently for a power selection switch (fortunately I had a spare plug-in transformer which was compatible with the DC input socket and so was able to use the radio. This would not have happened if the instructions had included a specific reference to the presence and site of the power selector switch.

  • Medium qualitty with lots features

Everything functions as described. But the Bass control wheel does little to the bass output even it's all the way clockwise.

  • Nice Features

Nice reception, good sound, easy to use. Volume control OK (too sensitive) but rest of the unit is fine. Nice to be able to play some old tapes I have. Good value.

  • great radio

I like this radio. .All the functions work. It sounds good and the radio pulls stations good. They sound clear and you can record them directly onto a USB or an SD card or you can put them on to cassette tape.As as with all shortwave radios the shortwave comes in best at night after the sun goes down and the ionosphere has raised up so the signals can bounce further. You do have to make sure the tapes are good because old tapes will not record very well and you'll think there's something wrong but it's most likely just an old outdated tape .My pre recorded music tapes are old but play well. the SD card works fine. the radio looks nice and it doesn't take up a lot of space. It's got an AC power cord in the back or you can put batteries in it. I think it's pretty nice for the money. You can also record live onto the SD card or on the tape recorder. Each has a built-in microphone. What more could you ask for? There are a row of colored lights that indicate how long your volume is getting and the eq has 3 controls and they all function so you can customise the sound to your taste. I don't know how long it will last but it works excellent now. I should buy two and I may if this one hols up.

  • Faulty Radio

Everything worked except for the digital recording from cassette. However, the cassette door has problems accepting cassettes. I discovered that if I used a tool to put significant downward pressure on a cassette while pushing the door closed at the same time, I could get it closed. The volume was not very loud. I was in a mid-sized room and tried sharing a song with family, but the it was difficult for everyone to hear the words. The radio seemed to work well and I could play music from the flash drive USB. It was disappointing to not be able to record from it, though, since that was my purpose in buying it, to transfer cassettes to digital.

  • You get what you pay for

I purchased this radio on ebay so I could convert all of my cassettes onto the radio works ok, however, it is very cheaply made. . I would not recommend leaving this product plugged in as it could be a fire hazard it does what it says it's supposed to do. However, converting cassettes to MP 3 is very poor quality. Everything is in mono. It looks cool. You get what you pay for. The radio sounds good. But as about as all this unit is worth for.

  • You gets what you pays for ...

I wanted a radio one step up from the one in my alarm clock ... and this is that. It has more volume, and a better low end. But it's not for listening to music. My biggest gripe is with the on-off switch which is as cheap and tacky a piece of plastic as I have ever seen on an appliance. I expect it to break every time I touch it. BUT for occasional use listening to NPR talk radio and costing under-$50 -- "good enough, I guess." When it breaks, I'll buy another and spend more.

  • Don't buy this...give the cash to the poor is better.

Played once. The AC cord does not work. The cassette player don't work. Only found out after I got hold of a cassette,,,,way later. After I realised that I purchased thrash ....I opened it before dumping and found that the motor for the cassette player was hanging in the cavity. My time is way more valuable than to grade this thrash.......only to warn folks away .......that is my solace .... Revenge is so sweet!!!!!
