    Bird peanut feeder (Squerrel-proof)

Have a great problem with squirrels eating from feeders that do not have the wire cage. Although the birds prefer the feeder without the cage, at least this feeder prevents the food being taken by squirrels. I read one review stating that Squirrels were able to remove the lid. This is easily solved by drilling 1/8 inch hole in the top through to the cage below, and dropping a nail or screw through the hole. The lid is held by a bayonet type mechanism and is easily filled.

  • Most critical review

Poor design but achieves the aim

As other reviewers have found the lid is very hard to open and close. This one has one flange pointing up and one down so the lid is never going to sit down properly. A poor design made worse by poor manufacture. Getting the whole top off for cleaning is totally impossible. I’m living with it as it has so far stopped the rooks and jackdaws eating all the nuts and the small birds have started using it again and it is strongly made and well finished.

  • Strongly constructed and actually deters unwanted visitors.

This robust bird feeder is successful in immediately deterring large birds like starlings and jackdaws and also squirrels. The only drawback to it is that the lid is a little difficult to engage onto the base after filling it. Care should also be taken to line up the wire mesh into the top . Would still recommend to solve the nuisance of large birds bothering the small ones during feeding.

  • Starling Proof

I almost gave up feeding the birds in my garden as the starlings arrived like locusts and ate everything I put out in minutes, leaving nothing for other birds. They make an awful mess too, to add insult to injury. This feeder is the ONLY one I have tried that keep starlings and bigger birds out. Sparrows, Robins and Bluetits use it with ease, hopping though the outer cage like its not there. I have all three different types of these feeders and they all work just as well. They are sturdy and well made, Worth every penny.

  • It takes a squirrel about two minutes to get the top off

I got in touch with Gardman to tell them that the squirrel got the top off immediately and they said that it would only be squirrel proof if it was hung where squirrels could not get to it!!! They said it should not be hung from a tree or a building or a fence. I said that I hung mine from the bird feeder as I was trying to feed the birds. It does not work and should not be called squirrel proof. I have adapted mine with using a long strong spring which I hook on one side and over the lid and hook it on the other side and that works as it is too strong for a squirrel to get the spring off but I had to adapt it myself. I wondered if the lady at Gardman could supply sky hook so that I could hang it from thin air and no squirrel would be able to get at the feeder then!!! - quite amusing really.

  • There are lots of bird feeders with a si...

There are lots of bird feeders with a similar type of design, but this one has a much wider space between the 'cage' and the tube you fill with peanuts. Ideal for keeping predatory larger birds away - ditto squirrels!

  • Gardman - Quality of Finish

This bird feeder has been hanging in our garden for two weeks. It is already showing signs of rust around the top. Yes, its been a very wet period, nevertheless it should be able to withstand a bit of rain. Its clearly not going to fall apart but I suspect it will become unsightly by the end of the coming winter. Clearly not the Ebayers fault but an issue with Gardman build quality. As a plus the squirrels have not been able to get to the peanuts.

  • Could Sooooooo Easily Do Better

This is a good starling-proof feeder. However, the feeder catch and the guard catch operate in opposite directions and leads to the guard falling off when you close the feeder. What an elementary and silly mistake to make in an otherwise good yet could be great design.

  • Does what it says - squirrel proof

Good product, good value and it does deter the squirrels.

  • Perfect shape

Well designed. As well as squirrels it keeps magpies and jackdaws off the feeder as they can't reach through the bars. They used to empty the feeder in a day. The bluetits and robins love it. Have recommended it to a friend, giving them the Ebay web link.
