Starrett Automatic Centre Punch with Adjustable Stroke features a lightweight, knurled steel handle for a positive grip and easy handling. The internal mechanism strikes a blow when downward pressure is applied. Spring tension, which regulates the blow is constant so marks made by the point are uniform in depth and size for each setting. The point can be easily removed for regrinding or replacement. It has an adjustable cap that regulates the stroke.

Fine point with smooth action
The tool is light weight and has good positive grip. The fine point makes it easy to locate the layout markings and the smooth action means it doesn't move when compressing the spring. When marked you may find that you need a more positive mark but it makes it easy to locate a centre punch and give a good tap with the hammer.

Starrett 18-A automatic centre punch
I thought I'd treat myself to a decent automatic punch from a well known manufacturer. It certainly looks the part, but:- The action is not reliable, or repeatable with any confidence. The business end is not adequately heat treated. Should have got myself a Moore&Wright!
