Nice little set for a child - could be used by an adult but there may better options for adults
As a keen watercolourist myself, I bought this set for my 6 year old niece who showed a precocious interest in painting & drawing - but this set is really intended for older children/teenager/starter adults. It is a proper water colour set - made in England - not a cheap kids set and is priced accordingly.
I opted for this set over the cheaper, smaller, Winsor & Newton Cotman sketcher's box - which I normally give & recommend for children & beginners - because I thought the cute shape would appeal more to my little niece. It has 4 extra colours but actually for a beginner, less colours is better - less to think about & it requires the painter to learn to mix colours which is an important skill they must learn. The extra colours include: purple (which I loath), and black & white - which beginners (& most others) should generally avoid using.
Pros:
Although probably student grade, the colours used so far seem impressively strong & dense (e.g. Lemon Yellow) compared to Winsor & Newton Cotman.
Attractive Tin. Lots of mixing spaces (which can be moved out) although rather small. Nice brush.
Cons:
- Doesn't include proper hard plastic half pans - the paints sit directly in the flimsey white plastic interior (junk food type plastic ). That was a disappointment :(.
- They so should have painted the inside of the lid white - it would have made an excellent, luxurious, mixing area with an interesting centre mixing well but instead they painted it with a colour. Pretty, pretty but also pretty daft - appearance over substance - they missed a trick :(
Overall though, it is a very nice set for a child and perfectly usable by anyone as a starter set. These Daler-Rowney paints are impressively good - at least as good at Winsor & Newton Cotman (which I like - and which continue to improve). I believe J. M. W. Turner used both Daler-Rownery & Winsor & Newton - both good, long established companies. The US company Daniel Smith also make great artist-grade paints.
