High quality, decent price, and utterly reliable mag for your 1911
My first experience with a Mec-Gar 1911 mag was when I had a nickel version (unmarked) shipped as a factory mag with a stainless Kimber years ago. The mag box is essentially identical to a mil-spec GI magazine- the secret to this mag's greatness is in the follower and spring. The mec-Gar follower has a tab extending down from the from of the stepped follower, unlike the standard flat metal GI follower. This feature prevents the follower from tilting down and failing to engage the slide stop after the last round. It also prevents the follower from sliding forward after the last round, as happens with the mil-spec follower. When this happens on a GI-style mag, it fails to engage the slide stop, and also hangs out the front of the mag far enough to prevent ejection of the empty mag; it has to be forcible ripped from the gun, which is hard to do without an extended baseplate attached. These Mec-Gar mags will never do that. In addition, the stepped follower design is 100% reliable in locking the slide back, at least on all of my 1911's. The springs are wound with smaller coils at the top, which are positioned at the rear of the spring, making it easy to prevent assembling it backwards. With a welded floorplate, these mags strip and reassemble through the top just like a mil-spec, with only a little extra attention needed to get the follower in and out properly. In short, if you have a mil-spec 1911 or just like the look of a flush-fitting traditional magazine, but you want one that is utterly reliable, these are an excellent choice.
