An air pump creates a flow of bubbles that in turn pulls water through the gravel at the bottom of the bowl where waste material is trapped.

Worked great for 2 days
Worked for 2 days, then stopped producing bubbles. Opened up the filter and noticed that the rubber seal had ripped. Waste of money! Stay clear!
