Great value from Makita for a well sorted and great performing set of HSS drill bits.
Cobalt or HSS? I was in a tiz, and I've been drilling steel for 30 years. I needed a new set of bits and read the typical extreme reviews you seem to find on line these days: "Oooh I tried to drill through a diamond and blah blah blah...." or even worse "These drills are rubbish cos the postman delivered them to my neighbour....." Why do people write such reviews? Buy appropriate for your needs. I drill lots of mild steel - no stainless or hardened steel, so why would I buy Cobalt Steel bits for twice the price??? I wouldn't. This set of HSS are APPROPRIATE for my needs. I need to drill mild steel and I need to be able to easily sharpen them - HSS - Bingo! Are any drill bits indestructible and last forever? No! All drill bits wear out, or blunt or snap, especially if you don't use them appropriately. If you buy UNBRANDED then you might as well throw all caution to the wind because you have no idea what you're buying - ALWAYS BUY BRAND BECAUSE THE DIFFERENCE IS HUGE - and Makita are one of the best for value and performance. The steel case was robust and tight-closing. The galleries for the bits allow easy storage and rapid indexing of the right size - take it from a man who kept his bits loose in a tobacco tin for years - an indexed gallery is awesome! The bits I've used so far (about half of them) have performed effortlessly, drilling clean hole after clean hole (but I've been doing it for years and I know what I'm doing) through mild steel from 3mm to 25mm thick. I expected nothing less. When the regularly used ones dull, I know I can EASILY re-sharpen them because they're HSS and not cobalt steel. My last set of bits lasted 30+ years but that's a bit like Trigger's broom because I did replace any that snapped (yes drill bits snap occasionally) - and I'm confident that this set will give good service for the next 30+ years, and when I dull one, I'll sharpen it, and when I snap one I'll replace it.
