Neilsen Chain Saw sharpner
So I have a couple of chainsaws and have traditionally just bought replacement chains rather than the hassle of sharpening them as i'm not a heavy user. I just have the occasional heavy session of log cutting for my log fire. The kit arrived quickly after my order and I had a couple of chains that needed sharpening so I set about using my new toy..... My first observation was that it came in very few parts, which was good, less to put together incorrectly. However the manual that accompanied it was very poor. badly printed and the figures were all combined onto a single A5 sheet at the back which help 9 postage stamp pictures which may has well have been blobs of ink. This could be a problem for some people that may not be "DIY" adept or do not have 20:20 eyesight with built in zoom lenses. Saying that a bit of common sense and and you can work out what needs to be done. No guidance on the angle of the blade or how to use it.!!!! go to You Tube and watch a demo. save yourself some frustration. Common sense rules again and I had to do my chains twice before the fine adjustment knob came into play and they appeared to be sharp. Good: easy setup, easy to use Bad : documentation Take note of the You tube demo and advice. It needs to be mounted high with plenty of space for the chain to dangle (gravity) as it help with the process. I put mine on an sturdy old nest of tables about a foot square on top of a work bench as you do tend to need to look closely to make sure you have it right. The description is a chain saw sharpener and drill bit sharpener, the drill bit sharpener doesn't exist. There is no guide included, no means of holding a drill bit. Does it work as a chain saw sharpener...........I've no idea, I'm already disappointed so have put it back in the box. There are several brands of this type of chain sharpener around and I just plumped for the one that looked sturdier than the others in the same price range. It works a treat and gives the chain a nice sharp cutting edge very easily. It's much better than fiddling around with a round file. Good Value and it does the job.
I searched through a lot of adverts for chain sharpeners before ordering this one. I didn't want to spend a fortune as my usage wouldn't warrant the expense. Neither did I want to buy a "Toy". I considered the size of the motor and the materials it is made of. It arrived promptly after ordering. I examined the machine and found that it was bigger than I had imagined. The base is an alloy casting not steel so I will be careful how much strain I put on it. I have bolted the base to a board with a piece of timber running across it underneath , I can clamp this in the vice on my bench and allow the chain to dangle down freely. Works a treat, not to tricky to set up and it is quieter than I would have expected. All I need to do now is order a spare abrasive wheel and I expect to be sharpening my chains for a long time to come.
