    Ok For Small Tasks

Having owned this now for a few weeks, I feel I can give this product an honest review. Essentially, it is what it looks like it is - a small, manual, lightweight log splitter. Having said this though, it feels very solid and well built. It easily splits my small logs and timber, and feels comfortable for this purpose, but when faced with a hefty substantial log, (still within the quoted size parimiters), it is simply not up to the job. The cutting blade just wedges into the wood, and you can feel the rack and pinion splitting mechanism just "skipping" over each other, forcing you to release any pressure for fear of breaking the machine. I now find myself having just purchased an electric log splitter to do the job that this one cannot, and it does it with such simplistic ease. Would I recommend? Well yes, I would. Despite the main issue mentioned above, I still find myself using my manual splitter for small lightweight tasks, and due to its slightly more delicate nature, it is excellent for splitting your own kindling, a task for which I have it sitting on my work bench where I actually operate the foot pedal with my hand. Am I going to cut my losses and sell it on now I have an electric splitter? No, as I still find this useful for these smaller tasks. The simple thing to remember is that it is just a foot operated splitter with a 1 tonne splitting force, compared to 5 tonne + for its electric cousin. Bear this in mind, and you won't go far wrong . If you only need it for small jobs, and occasionally splitting small logs, then I would highly recommend, but for regular splitting of large logs, then it has to be an electric splitter with a much larger capacity.

    Lightweight and easily stored

May work well on softwood or fresh hardwood but splitting seasoned hardwood takes considerable effort especially on the stroke that actually opens up the log. Just gave up on anything with large knots. Was not always possible to advance the log sufficiently for the next ratchet to become engaged, so kept a small lump hammer handy to tap further on or to knock log off the splitting head. Also the foot pedal could be at least 50% larger. With hindsight, at my age (late 70s) wish that I had spent a bit more and bought electric or hydraulic although these are much heavier and require more storage space. May be OK for those younger and fitter.

  • Has solved my log splitting problem

I need to split logs for my wood burner but when obtaining largish bits of tree I find that my splitting maul/axe is difficult to use effectively and seldom splits logs with one stroke, more often getting stuck in the wood. This log splitter is very robust and has split all of my logs with no problem. There is a bit of a learning curve e.g. often it is necessary to add another log or brick to the pushing end if the log is short and sometimes the angle of the log needs rotating if the blade is struggling against a cross grain.

  • Simple, useful and seems well made

This is a really good piece of kit - clever and simple. Unsurprisingly, works better the drier the wood is, but as long as the wood is placed in line with the wood's grain it will cut well. Only thing I'd point out to prospective purchasers is that, other than for small and very dry logs, you'll need to use a lot more power/energy/weight on the pedal than the dainty easy steps the Sealey demo video shows! Overall, very useful and seems well made.

  • A log splitter that splits logs.

Bit rickety but does the job, I find placing your hands on your knee really helps make the cut. I can split double the logs now, so would still recommend.

  • Love it

Excellent value for money and great for a novice log splitter like me . This is so much easier than an axe/ maul/ star bomb etc . Split much larger logs than stated . But must admit after spending all summer splitting logs I will probably invest in an electric log splitter . This product is a must , lightweight, easy to use & extremely effective. After snapping by a spring almost 12 months after purchase , Sealey were very quick to send out a replacement. Buy one now !

  • foot operated log splitter review

Simple effective tool for small medium sized uncomplicated logs. Will cope with low level knots - easier to work on Ash as opposed to oak for example. Great for processing loads of ready burn seasoned or kilm dired wood - would reccomend for the home burn user to get initial burn size logs ready for the hearth or wood stove.

  • Excellent

I’m on my own so chopping logs used to take hours. With this great tool, once I worked out getting the height right, it was a piece of cake and did two weeks worth of logs in less than an hour!

  • safe and simple

very easy mechanism slightly fiddly to set up needs a certain amount of movement before it cuts and ratchets straightforward to use requires very little strength can take several strokes to split each log limited ability to split knotty logs much easier than swinging an axe

  • Simple to use

This log splitter is very easy to use and does the job for a very reasonable price. As a woman with a husband who has no interest in splitting logs I am overjoyed to be able to do it myself quickly and easily!!
