Great 'touch stick' for heel training

This type of product was recommended by our dog trainer as a way of encouraging my dog to walk at heel. I do not use the clicker. Instead, I taught him (the dog, not the trainer!) to touch the small ball on the end of the stick with his nose whilst it hung down from my waist on the left side, slightly extended for a length suited to him. Initially, I trained him by getting him to touch my left hand with his nose with a hidden treat inside whilst saying "touch" and then rewarding him with a treat from my right hand. (He didn't get the hidden treat). I then progressed to smearing the small ball with peanut butter or coconut oil (whilst it hung from my left-hand side) which encouraged him to touch the hanging stick at my side when I said "touch". Once he understood that, I discarded the peanut butter/oil & rewarded him with a treat from my right hand. He learnt that when I said touch and he touched the ball with his nose, he was rewarded with a treat from my right hand. Finally, now, when I say "touch", he walks close to me & I sometimes treat him, but only when he has walked by my side. This may sound a lot to do, but it only took a few days of training (my dog is a Cavapoo) & it is working very well.

    Too fragile

I absolutely loved this target stick for the first few days... perfect balance in the hand, the telescopic metal stick part easy to pull in and out and not too wobbly, the ball is good & intuitive for the dogs to use, and the retractable line is a great feature making it easy to have handy and doesn't get lost. It is awesome. but then... it broke already after a few days of use. While training the dog with the target stick, I accidentally got my hand in the way for the thinnest section of the telescopic stick, near the end/ball, and it immediately bended 90 degrees and broke. I've now managed to stuff the broken end down into the next telescopic link with a tool, and it seems to stay there, so I can use the stick again, it is just a bit shorter. However, I am disappointed that it broke so easily

  • Really well made item. I recommend.

Excellent design, well made, works to clcik and point with one hsnd, allowing a free hand to e.g. offer treats. It can be used as a high quality clicker alone by merely collapsing the telescopic stick/ball. Extendable attacher (which has a separation clip built in) has brooch clip to attach to clothing, and a spring-loaded string to allow the device to hang free and reel in if you let it go. All in all, it's a well designed aid to training at a good price.

  • It's ok...

I love the built in clicker but the telescopic function is a bit flimsy. It's okay once your dog knows how to use it but it cannot stand any enthusiastic nosing while it is a new concept to them. The telescopic part bends very easily preventing it retracting properly.

  • Easy to handle and effective

Easy to use and the clip is easy to attach to clothing when moving around. I have trained my cat so the pointing stick that is extendable is invaluable as a focus point for him!

  • Excellent training aid

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the training tool is sturdy well made and a lot better quality than what I was expecting. You have options to attach the target stick to your belt so that you can free up your hands if necessary. You can extend the target stick to suit what ever training you are doing. Overall this is an excellent item and I highly recommend you purchase it. Great price great value.

  • Good gadget, lightweight and very hand for pet training

Works exactly as described, I'd heard it's a bit wobbly, but it works just fine for small animals that are careful (cat in our case). Not sure you could guide an unruly, strong dog with it, but you could still use it as a pointer. It's telescopic, has a decently loud clicker noise and all in all is exactly as described.

  • Dangerous to use

As a trainer of dogs for over 45 years I bought this to try. The ball is far to small and if the dog is excited their is a risk of eye loss. The extendable pole though a good idea is way to flimsy for larger dogs. I do not recommend this item at all. Use a plastic pole with a tennis ball on the end instead. Cheaper to.

  • Perfect

This item was perfect. I bought it to train a cockatiel bird and she's taken to it really well. It is exactly what I wanted and needed
