I am an experienced navigator familiar with a wide range of equipment. The compass supplied is well made and crazily cheap but differs from that illustrated in the advert, so should not be used for initial training of beginners since it has features which might only further confuse what some already find a tricky business. The inner orange moving degrees dial is the only relevant one while the outer fixed black one is irrelevant and confusing. The black more legible outer dial should be moving and the inner (less legible) one deleted. There are some useful and helpful measurement scales / rulers on the edges but no ROMER ... which is a scale which helps when taking grid references off of the map. I am pleased with my purchase which is to be carried in the car to aid direction finding if disorientated in strange and complex foreign cities. As a front-line No.1 compass when walking on the hills possibly in wild conditions I would not be so comfortable. If the manufacturers made some slight modifications while maintaining their high standards of materials and manufacturing then they would have a product that would challenge the market leaders. This is a piece of PRC made junk. Specific to the the item delivered to me; the floating needle does not balance at its pivot point and thus the compass rose or housing cannot rotate independently while the needle points to magnetic north . This is dangerous and will get you lost or worse, kill you if you rely on it for direction when you need it. The nylon lanyard supplied with the compass is great.

Compass has several useful scales & functions. **Note** that the main/upper scale of the compass is marked in NSEW and MILS rather than degrees. The lower/inner scale *is* calibrated / marked in degrees, with 0-90 and 270-360 marked in red, so if you're planning to use this at night, under red-light conditions, the 270-0-90 region will appear invisible. Compass also marked with luminescent-like/light-retaining (does not emit like the old-stuff used to), indicators along the longitudinal centre of the base, in addition to the tip of the compass needle and 'dot' markings located both sides of the inner, rotating, dial. Scales are 1:25000 metres, 1:50000 & 1:63360, in addition to each (opposite) side of the base being marked in 0-100mm and 0-2 inches (in 1/16" steps). There's also a ~1" diam magnifying circle on the base, if you'd not already noticed.Read full review

Cheap rubbish and does not even read true north and stay there. The lugs that both small screws are in were split so its in the bin, not worth sending back. But at £2.53 it is to be expected.

The pin doesn't spin round very well and you have to keep tapping the side of the compass to get it to move.
