Works fine - but tight fit

We used it once and it was fine. The battery holder is tight on ours, and is hard to take off the Dyson without also pulling the battery off. If you were not strong in the hand it might be challenging. I'm considering soldering the electrics from this onto the battery holder from the Dyson one, as there's nothing apart from the contacts to connect up on the holder.

  • Most critical review

Do not throw the old one away - you will may need the 'old' cradle

As others have said - it does charge a Dyson DC16, but the cradle supplied is an extremely tight fit on the vac. The solution I used was to use the 'new' charger and electrical wire, contacts etc, but the old cradle. This means dismantling the old cradle to insert the wire and contacts from the new charger.(its only unpopping some plastic clips - there is at least one review which describes it). After doing this it occurred to me that its probably easier to just cut the cables and join the wires from the new charger to the wires to the old cradle, but you will need a multimeter to check that the positive and negative are still the correct way round at the sprung battery contacts. I do think that it would be helpful if the people selling this item included suggestions as to how to get round this problem.

  • Plug works ok but base unit doesn't fit

This replacement base unit doesn't fit the DC 16 battery unless you fancy using a mallet to remove the vacuum cleaner after forcing it in. It's a shame because the actual electrical components seem reasonable quality but the plastic moulding is of very poor quality and accuracy. You could fix it with the use of a file and some patience, however, the spring contacts and cabling are easily removed and will fit into the original Dyson charger base without a great deal of effort. It would be good if just the contacts and power supply could be purchased without the base as it's unusual for the base to fail and the original one can usually be reused. To swap the charging base, squeeze the 3 retaining lugs on the rear of the base and pull off the cover. The contacts and cable can be simply pulled from their locating pins and labyrinth. I had to trim the labyrinth pins with a Stanley knife to allow for thicker cable of the replacement unit. Reassemble, ensuring the terminals are located with correct polarity before snapping back on the cover.

  • DC16 charger

This is the only replacement DC16 charger I can find on the market so I had to buy it despite reviews. I agree with them, it's too small and it's almost impossible to get the battery out of it. It looks good and charges fine, just too small. My husband is going to use it to fix the original one by soldering the wires of the plug to the old base. You can actually vacuum with the charger still attached (so you don't have to keep ripping it out) but eventually you have to remove it as you can't empty it otherwise. I have to recommend it as otherwise the DC16 is for the dustbin! Message to vendor, please make it a bit wider!!

  • Dyson charging station

Only buy this if you are capable of changing over the docking station to the original Dyson one. If you do not have an original Dyson docking station then you have a problem as the none original one is to tight for the battery to go in. If you force the battery in trying to get it out is very difficult without using a screw drivers a lever.

  • job done

this charger does not fit my dc16. i could not get one anywhere. mine was the model just before, and the battery was slightly larger. but with some awkward filing inside the holder, i was able to get it to fit and use to charge my old dc16. there is a great motor in this vacuum, to last as long has it has.

  • Don't throw the old one away.

So glad I read the other reviews. Base station too tight but just pop the back open and use the new wire in the old base station. A five year old could do it, you might need a screwdriver to pop the back but then your fingers only. Take a picture of the old one open to be sure you put it in place correctly, two holes in one contact only, one in the other, so it seats with correct polarity. Delighted that it is charging well.

  • TIGHT WHAT WORD IS TIGHTER THAN TIGHT!!!

Arrived fast. I thought great put the hoover on charge straight away as I bet she dying to use it!! Spent the next ten minutes trying to get the battery back out. Read the reviews and luckily we kept the old original one and swapped the wires all good now.

  • It’s ok but the Dyson sticks when trying to remove it from charge

I needed a replacement docking charger as the original I had was no longer working. The shipping was good and it arrived fairly quickly. Unfortunately the charger size is not exact for the Dyson and when I put it into charge, it’s very hard to get it back out. It works but trying to remove the Dyson, it dislodges the battery (which is then stuck inside) from the main body. Not ideal but I have 2 batteries and I can alternate between them so it’s not too much of a pain. Couldn’t get an original replacement as Dyson lo longer has it available so I guess this will have to do.

  • Moulding tolerances too tight

Arrived quickly but the holder is far too tight on existing battery (I have 2 batteries) and couldn't get them in far enough to allow charging. However it is an identical design in all respects to original case and my problem was a dead transformer so all I had to do was a quick change over of all the electrics in one piece onto the old holder and all good. No screws or anything required as back plate is clipped on. Job took 2 mins and up and running and working well.
